Occidental Petroleum Corporation is the U.S based an international company which deals in production and exploration of oil and gas, also known as Oxy. It is an industry leader which is based on equity market that boosts production by applying advancement in the technology (Strong Results Assets Outlook).

Oxy also deals in the production of chemicals known as Occidental Chemical Corporation (OxyChem). It is a leading North American that produces chemicals like caustic soda, chlorine and PVC resins but oil and natural gas operations are the core business of Oxy. This production and exploration activities are concentrated in three geographical regions: the Middle East/ North America, the Latin America and the United States and hence, Occidental Petroleum Corporation is a well-positioned for success in today's complex and dynamic business environment. The company is striving to manage production in a cost effective way, built exemplary safety and for enhancing environmental business performance. The company invests only in the project that complements existing assets and can strengthen the financial criteria. OXY not only emphasizes on the performance of the company but also focused on the Individual's performance in the team. In order to enhance performance, the company adopts process of training and development (Strong Results Assets Outlook).

I have joined OXY as an HR intern for eight weeks. I am pursuing Bachelors Degree in International Business from "AL HOSN University" and have been joined Occidental Petroleum Corporation through the career centre of my university. I have joined internship programme for eight weeks as per my requirements and needs of understanding the basic core of nationalization and function of HR in organizations. The eight weeks training course includes housing and relocation, recruitment, immigration and Visa and understanding of organizational structure under the supervision of mentor.

My Area of Responsibilities and Training:

The company accepted me as an HR intern and during my eight weeks interrelated course work and training I was provided with instructions and supervised practice and was entitled for the following responsibilities:

Rotation in the Process of Recruitment.

Housing and Relocation process.

Visa and Immigration.

Understanding and Implementing Organizational Structure.

Understanding Nationalizations Aim of the Company.

The above responsibilities have been entitled to me under a supervision of mentor. He supervised me to fulfill all my responsibilities and to crafting my training in an effective and proper manner. This training impact very positively as from rotation in recruitment, I learn about the process of building up strategy for making recruitment process efficiently. Similarly, I learn about the important aspects of nationalizations aim and organizational structure of the company.

Tasks undertaken at OXY:

During my training session in last week, I went through the presentation on "How to work in US Based Company". This presentation was interesting and very impactful as it explores about the cultural differences in organizations because the US is a region that has multicultural workforce and diversity in the management. Therefore, this presentation guides me to manage diversity in the management in the UAE also on the position of HR of the company. At the same time, it acquaint with the roles and responsibilities and functions associated with the training and development department of the company that develop my skills and roles in managing function of training and development department being an HR of OXY.

After completion of this task, I asked by my mentor to go through the company training calendar for the year 2012-2013 and provide with my personal opinion and suggestion about the scheduling of the calendar and its impacts on individuals. As checked, this training calendar included the scheduling as per following:

This training course is deigned for those who manage performance of the staff on daily basis. In OXY, the performance management course is designed in such a way that it can equips delegates with the techniques and skills so that staff can perform to the peak of their talents and capabilities.

Learn OXY.com refers to the introduction and website of the company. It entails goal, aim and culture of the organization and also emphasizes on the rules, regulation and policies of the company.

Habits for highly effective people course:

This course includes seven habits of highly effective people which educates to balance key priorities, improves interpersonal communications, apply principles for achieving a balanced life, how to take initiatives and leverage for creative collaboration.

Time Management:

This course teaches about the management of the time in the organization as well as out of the organizations that how can work can be accomplished in the effective way in the short time duration.

Conversional Arabic ( for Non Arabic)

As OXY has 37 % of world wide production in Middle East therefore, Arabic language is an important aspect to learn and make conversation successfully and to get contented in the work environment.

Microsoft office (inclusive of basic and intermediate courses):

Microsoft office course enhance the basic and intermediate concepts of the system which helps to work effectively and make expertise in technical aspects also.

After analyzing the training calendar and concepts and utility of each course, I found that the scheduling can be revised as Time Management is the important course which would be beneficial in our training session also so order of time management can be revised. In order to work in the company, introduction of the company should be first thing to get it know so the training session should start with the "Learn OXY.com". Then we can schedule with the habits for highly effective people because it would help to enhance the attributes of individuals and perfect one can adopt the management strategies and policies very easily and in an effective way like performance management course. In my opinion, all courses are significant and beneficial for individuals and for enhancing their skills and attributes in order to work more efficiently.

In context to Nationalizations Strategy, to attract university students my mentor asked me for the following list of tasks:

I started to visit Hala Executive Associate PR Specialist and call to Ashley Rockwell Manger Talent Recruiting to learn how OXY builds and maintains relations with universities.

To learn which company is doing best and what we can implement to do our best, I used to make calls to the Universities Career Center and try to adopt the features.

I started set a list for the career fair in context to different universities such as AUS, AUD, ADU and Khalifa University.

I started to make contact with the students in abroad and introduced OXY to them.

I demonstrate a way to review nationals CVs which are interested in employment like social networking websites.

This is an online tool used to enhance the learning experience of the Harvard Business Essentials book from Harvard Manage Mentor©. The book has been added to the OXY Employee Library.

Personal Career Development Plan:

This tool includes the planning for the development of Individual's Career. It defines the importance and process of success and helps to identify ways to achieve the success with this job aid.

Personal Emotional Intelligence (EI) Development Plan:

This development plan summarizes the factors that should implement in order to strengthen the individual's emotional intelligence.

It emphasizes not only to the company's objective but also focused on individual's skills, performance and values.
