Peripheral Devices And Components Computer Science Essay

Published: November 9, 2015 Words: 1283

A peripheral is a device to connect the host computer, but not build in part of it; it can be more or less dependent on the host. It expands the host's capacity and capabilities, but does not form part of the core in computer architecture. Peripheral devices also can be classified into two devices which are input and output devices. An input device is any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a computer. Output device also known as display device is a device that visually conveys text, graphics, and video information.

Mouse is a hand-operated electronic device that manipulates the coordinates of a cursor on the computer screen as we move it around on a surface. Normally it attach to computer using USB or PS2 plug. It can be categorized in few types of mouse that use under the bottom of the device show as table below:

Keyboard is a external input device used to type data into some sort of computer system whether it can be a mobile device, a personal computer, or another electronic machine. A keyboard usually includes alphabetic, numerical, and common symbols used in everyday transcription. Keyboards for personal computers are connected to the machine through PS2 or USB plugs.

Memory card also call flash card is an electronic flash memory data storage device used for storing or saving digital information data. They are commonly used in electronic devices which including digital cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, MP3 players, and video game consoles. They are small and recordable can retain data without using power. The capacity of memory card also differ depend on different electronic devices maximum supported. It contained minimum 128MB and maximum 16GB in the storage.

A headset is the combination of two headphones with a microphone or one headphone with a microphone. Headsets give identical functionality of a telephone handset with hands-free operation. Headsets generally have one speaker like a telephone but also supply speakers for both ears. They have many uses including in call centers and other telephone intensive jobs and also for personal purpose at the computer to assist comfortable simultaneous conversation and typing.

2.3.1 Remote Control (peripheral device for Television)

Figure 3.1

A remote control is an electronics device and most commonly a television set. It used for operating the television device wirelessly from a short line-of-sight distance. It usually functions for switching the TV channels, control the volume and also adjust the brightness, resolution and color.

2.3.2 Speaker (peripheral device for Television)

Figure 3.2

Speaker is a device that converts analog audio signals into the equivalent air vibrations to make audible sound. It usually set with a pair of speakers for the midrange and high frequencies subwoofer for the low end. The small speakers are placed in a left or right stereo orientation and the subwoofer can be placed anywhere on the floor because the bass signals are unidirectional.

2.4 Digital Camera (component)

2.4.1 Av Cable (peripheral device for Digital Camera)

Figure 4.1

A cable carries sound and picture to the user for almost all home entertainment equipment, such as televisions and DVD players. They are even functioned directly or with a plug adapter by other devices such as video cameras or game machines. It basically comes with 3 colors cable which are red, yellow and white. Red and white cable is uses for sound or audio function and yellow is only cable to conduct video.

2.4.2 High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) (peripheral device for Digital Camera)

Figure 4.2

A specification that combines video and audio into a single digital interface for use with digital versatile disc (DVD) players, digital television (DTV) players, set-top boxes, and other audiovisual devices. It produces higher pixels resolution to video and better sound system performance. Compare to AV-cable it also provide better performance but much more expensive to consumer. HDMI cable also classifies into 3 types which are full, mini and micro sizes.

Question Two Answer

Storage is a device for holds or recording data, instructions, and information for future use. To start up a computer locates operating system software in storage and loads it into memory. When user types a command to start application software like word processing program or a Web browser, the operating system will locates the program in storage and loads it into memory (RAM).

2.5 Storage for Home Users

2.5.1 USB flash drive

Figure 5.0

USB flash drive also call Pendrive is a small storage device that easier for user to carry. It can be functioning when user plug into computer's USB port. It allows user data to be easily distributed or transferred from one machine to another. It is very popularly for backup and transports the data; nowadays user can buy 2GB,4GB,8GB,16GB,32GB which are already sold in the market and offering much more storage than writable CDs and DVDs. It is generally used for home user such as student and worker.

2.5.2 CDs and DVDs

Figure 5.1

CDs and DVDs also called optical disc is electronic data storage that able user to record and save data information and read using a low-powered laser beam. It can be categorized into rewritable (RW) or recordable (R), rewritable optical disc normally much more expensive to consume because users are able to rewrite what the data information that keep in the disc but unable compare to recordable optical disc. Besides that, DVDs (4.7GB) contain bigger storage capacity compared to CDs (700MB). Optical disc only functions when it plays by the DVD player. It is extremely used for the home user.

2.5.3 Online Storage

Figure 5.3

Online data storage websites given a place to keep files, pictures, documents and other information through a server connected to the internet, giving people easier solution for computer backups, file sharing and data accessibility without the hassle of external drives. The sites are available in free and paid versions by depending on the size of space capacity and features. It keeping a backup of user information offsite incase of fire. Mostly people use online storage to share files with friends and family such as family photos.

2.6 Storage for Business Users

2.6.1 Hard Disc or External Hard Drive

Figure 5.4

Hard disc also called hard drive is a big capacity storage device to keep and backup data information. It provided faster transfer rate compare to USB flash drive. It commonly use for store video, picture, music and documents. The capacities of memory begin from 80 GB up to 2 TB and the minimum requirement for business user is 160 GB. External hard drives are also just a pocket sizes and easier for business users to carries. Besides that, hard disc also can be categorized in two sizes which are 2.5'inch and 3.5'inch, commonly 2.5'inch for laptop and 3.5inch for personal computer.

2.6.2 Floppy Disc

Figure 5.5

Floppy disk is a data storage that is composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium sealed in a square or rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles. It only contained 1.44MB for saving data, while floppy disk drives still available in some limited uses for legacy industrial computer equipment. For example, some programming systems are still using floppy disc to processing.

2.6.3 Picture CD

Picture CD is a product by Kodak and following from the earlier Photo CD product. It keeps photos from a single roll of color film and stored at 1024-1536 resolution using (JPEG) compression. It included the software to view and provide simple edits to pictures. The pictures also can be printed out on photographic paper by Kiosk (Figure 5.7).
