A small network, limited to a single collection of machines for one or more cables or other peripheral equipment, can be called a local area network.

Before designing the network, we need to understand the various topologies. There are two topologies, physical and logical topologies. The physical topology refers to the configuration of cables, PC, printers and other peripherals. The logical topology is used to pass the information between these devices. For examples, two types of LAN topologies, peer to peer and client-server are logical topology. Depending on the use of connectivity, there are 6 types of topologies:

But normally traditional core topologies are Bus, Ring and Star. Other topologies are extended from those of three.

Bus topology is the most preferably for using in Local Area Network. Bus network is easy to set up and expand. If one node is failed, the other nodes are still working.

A series of computers connected along a single cable segment in bus topology.

Ring is better performance than bus topology.

Signals typically travel in only one direction around the ring.

The data can be transmitted on only one pathway between the connected nodes.

If one of the node is added, removed and change of device can affect network.

Until the sending data is reached the destination, cannot send another data at that topology.

When one of the nodes transmits the data, and sends it around the ring to begin the process again.

Token Ring use in a ring topology which is the data sent from one machine to the next around the ring until it ends. It uses a token passing protocol which is that a machine can only use the network under controlling of the Token; this ensures that there are no collisions because only one machine can use the network at any given time.

Star topology is the most suitable for used in homes, offices and small networks.

All the nodes are connected at the same point, which is central node such as a switch and hub. All transfer data are passed through this hub.

When network signal are meet with cable failure, can be affected at only one computer

Data transfer rate may be slow because of long distance of cable.

In star network, the commonly useful cable is unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and Ethernet cables.

I'm going to use Star topology and medium for unshielded twisted-pair cable(RJ45).As using for star topology, it's easy to install, easy to troubleshoot problems, easy to connect with switch by using RJ45, can be reconfigured quickly, have better performance, don't have any disruption to the network when connecting or removing devices. As using for UTP -

Task3.1

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications)

I chose IP-PBX phone for dividing the telephone line. So, we need IP-PBX server to use IP-PBX phone. CDMA is the most suitable device because of its good frequency and the SIM card is easy to buy. Other network equipments is needed to install.

The Fire Department (needs to remain operational) in the event of serious incident such as a major terrorist attack or war. Explain the measures you would allow the Fire Department to operate in the event of Newtown having no electrical power and fixed telephone lines being broken.

The fire department is one the important office so we need to operate this office 24 hours even when disturb is come out. So, we need to maintain electrical power and telephone lines. At first we need to set up generator which can give us to continue our department's electricity and all PC and communication device can fill power by using it. So, we have to use high voltage generator. And then we have to use UPS which can give our PC stability and do not need to power off. That can maintain office computer because of its power. It supports when the electricity is break down immediately. The advantage is that the official information cannot be losing due to the electricity and some disturb. After that we need to connect all of the IP-phone so we need to supply power to the IP_PBX server. I use inverter for this server and some are charging for all phones, I mean CDMA Phone. If the telephone lines are cutting off, we have to use satellite phone instead of other devices.

The fire department is restricted in Newtown and is shortly opening a new headquarters building. The headquarters will house all the communications and computer systems for the fire department. This fire department covers 70 square kilometers. It has a Chief Fire Officer who is responsible for fire fighting, rescue cases and fire prevention. And then the Chief Officer is assisted for three Watch Officers who also carry out senior duties. The Chief Officer also does the operational duties of the fire department when their watch is on duty. The three watches are on duty for 8 hours per day.

Each watch is composed of 20 firefighters and there are 3 fire engines plus one car for the Watch Officer. All vehicles require two-way communication with the control centre. The control centre has three controllers on duty at any time who receives calls from the public and other emergency services when required and maintain contact with firefighters when they are at an accident.

Newtown Department is renewing all of its networks for the new headquarters including the computer network, telephone communications and two-way communications with firefighters when they are out in the department's vehicles.

In task 1, we have to choose many topologies such as star topology, ring topology and bus topology. They are typical network topology. I chose star topology because of its benefits. It is easy to install, easy to troubleshoot problems, easy to connect with switch by using RJ45, can be reconfigured quickly, have better performance, don't have any disruption to the network when connecting or removing devices. After that, I chose the UTP cable because of it's widely use and less space for it and can easily install and flexible.

In task2, we chose MPT for Newtown fire departments. There are many kind of internet service of MPT. I use Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). There are five type of ADSL. They are divided by type A, type B, type C, type D and type E. They have various speed and fees. So, I choose 2 line of Type C for need of 2Mbps. The cost of initial set up fee is 1400$, Monthly fee is 100$ and Annual fee is 60$ for one line. The modem fee is almost 100$. The MPT of the ADSL fee rate are as follows:

In task3, we have to choose DECT and TETRA standard. So, I chose DECT standard because it can use cordless phones. DECT standard cordless phones use radio waves used. It is connected to the sending station by the station, you can call the network. The station can be connected to the VoIP service. DECT can use half-duplex and full duplex communication methods. This can use a variety of communication (one to one, many, many). It uses different frequency around the world. So, DECT is the most suitable for fire department. I chose the cordless phone for Motorola's GP328 because it supports an interface that allows third party developers to create applications in a single run control palette, modify or expand the radio. And then I choose GTR ASTRO satellite radio support base 8000 because it support DECT standard and it transmit ultra high frequency to connect cordless phone and it also support to extend the range of frequency to become larger. So, the fire department can use the cordless phone form the distance area because of wide transmission of frequency. I chose the cordless for 60 fire fighters. It will support the continuous connection between fire department however they were outside of the office area. They are prize of some equipment for fire department needs.

In Task 5 I had been used generator, UPS, inverter and satellite phone. Generator, when the electric break down it protects losing power and responsibility for the entire department. UPS is to prevent electrical break down or over voltage for computer, ADSL modern, access point and other devices. Inverter to prevent the whole electrical devices when electric breaks down and had a case at the generator. Satellite phone is to get important information when happened at internet connection or telephone system. I also use printer to print out the requirement for an emergency.
