Published: November 30, 2015 Words: 1623

Purpose of motherboard: It is called the main board of a computer. All devices are connecting with it. We cannot build a full computer without it. These buses allow data to travel between the various components that comprise a computer. A motherboard is also known as the system board, the backplane, or the main board. The motherboard accommodates the central processing unit (CPU), RAM, expansion slots, heat sink/fan assembly, BIOS chip, chip set, and the embedded wires that interconnect the motherboard components. Sockets, internal and external connectors, and various ports are also placed on the motherboard.

Storage devices

Names of Storage devices:

Primary storage.

Secondary storage.

Fig: Storage Devices

Purpose and characteristics:

Primary storage.

Primary storage is a storage location that holds memory for short periods of times while the computer is on. Also known as main memory For example, computer RAM and cache are both examples of a primary storage device. This type of storage is the fastest type of memory in our computer and is used to store data while it's being used. For example, when we open a program data is moved from the secondary storage into the primary storage.

Secondary storage

Secondary storage is difference from primary storage it cannot directly access by the CPU. The computer usually uses its input/output channels for access secondary storage and transfers the desired data using intermediate area in primary storage. Secondary storage does not lose the data when the device is powered down-it is non-volatile. Data is kept for a longer time there.

Names of adapter card:

USB Adapter Card

Network adapter card.

Purpose and characteristics:

USB Adapter Card

An USB adapter card is an internal card that enables a computer to connect a keyboard, Mouse, Printer etc.By An USB adapter card we can connect a external devices with our computer easily. We also transfer data in a faster way help of it.

Network adapter card.

A network adapter card is an internal card that enables a computer to connect in a network. By A network adapter card we can connect our machine with internet or a LAN/WAN. Especially this adapter card is for network.

Name of some display devices:

LED text displays.

LCD text displays.

Purpose of display devices:

A light-emitting diode (LED) (pronounced is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are increasingly used for lighting. Introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.

Purpose of Serial ports:

In computing, a serial port is a serial communication physical interface through which information transfers in or out one bit at a time (contrast parallel port). Throughout most of the history of personal computers, data transfer through serial ports connected the computer to devices such as terminals and various peripherals.

Characteristics of Serial ports:

A serial cable is a cable that can be used to transfer information between two devices using serial communication. The form of connectors depends on the particular PHY used. A cable wired for connecting two DTEs directly is known as a null modem cable.

Purpose of parallel ports:

A parallel port is a type of interface found on computers for connecting various peripherals. In computing, a parallel port is a parallel communication physical interface. It is also known as a printer port or Centronics port.

Characteristics of parallel ports:

The PC parallel port usually consists of 25 pins in a DB-25 connector. These pins can interface to the TTL logic of an external device, either as inputs or outputs. Some pins can be used as inputs only, while some can be switched in software, on-the-fly, between input mode and output mode.

Purpose of USB:

USB has effectively replaced a variety of interfaces such as serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, Network Adapters, and external hard drives. For many of those devices, USB has become the standard connection method.

Characteristics of USB ports:

The popularity of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) in the consumer electronic space is unquestionable. Most of today's computer and other peripherals can be connected to a USB port for data transfer, including flash cards, digital cameras, printers, mice, keyboards and others. The USB 2.0 specification has expanded market opportunities since data transfer rates can reach up to 480Mbps while maintaining the attractive plug-and-play characteristics of this interface.

Purpose of fire wire ports:

FireWire a port for high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer, frequently used by personal computers, as well as in digital audio, digital video, automotive, and aeronautics applications

Characteristics of fire wire ports:

Personal computers used to come with a bewildering array of connection ports, each necessary to connect a particular kind of peripheral. One kind of port was for printers, another kind for keyboards, another for the mouse, yet another for scanners and still a different one for modems
