Growing Business In Todays Competitive Marketplace Information Technology Essay

Published: November 30, 2015 Words: 6214

Growing your business in todays competitive marketplace requires new and innovative ways to reach out and touch your customers and prospects as with the evolution of new technologies people have turned from traditional and time consuming methods towards online shopping that is latest, faster and easier way to shop with the help of e-commerce from the last few years. The concept of e-commerce is fast becoming advantageous for both the vendor and consumer in today's fast moving and electronically-connected world.

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) is the use of electronic communication for buying and selling the products online, which involves the digital transaction between the merchant and the customer to do business. It may be used to carry out business-to-business or business-to-consumer transactions. It provides virtual market space where the customer and merchant meet to transact the business.

In this assignment we are making an E-commerce website for a small business enterprise, Cosmo Beauty i.e. a multi branded cosmetic reseller company, by using various e-commerce technologies, protocols, and standards. We have been told to complete this assignment with a group of six students and the names of our group members are:

Website accessibility is the process of rendering a website so that all and any users are able to access the web page content regardless of location, experience, or disability. An accessible website indicates the degree to which a website is usable, especially by the people with disabilities such as sight impairment.

In our website we have used a special handy free tool called Website Accessibility Toolbar, for checking website accessibility and compliance for vision impaired including people who are colour blind.

This Toolbar offers a range of functions including:

Evaluates the web pages against subset of the WAI (Web Accessibility) guidelines. These guidelines form the basis of most global legislation relating to accessibility for disabilities.

Reveal 'headers' and 'id' complex data table mark-up.

Identify components of a webpage

Success of Website:

Effective web site optimisation should address all these elements, by combining search-engine friendly pages with powerful sales copy and user-friendly design. The three elements of website success are:

attracting the right visitors to your website

converting the visitor to a customer once they arrive

providing a positive experience so that customers return and buy again

Step one in attracting the right visitors (i.e. the kind of visitors that are most likely to become customers) is to define your target group clearly. This will allow you to 'position' the site correctly - to find the most appropriate tone to talk to your visitors, and to develop the links, partnerships and listings which will most benefit your link popularity and traffic.

Step two is to determine how these potential customers will be seeking your information on the Web. For example:

i). Research all the relevant industry information sources and competitor websites to identify potential strategic partners and link locations: for example, listings in online directories, reviews by relevant online publications, and links from complementary product sites can all boost traffic and sales considerably. Offline promotion - especially in trade and national press - is also invaluable for driving sales.

ii). Evaluate actual user search behaviour in order to identify commonly-used search terms which relate to your product or industry area. Keyword research will identify the search terms which - when optimised for - are most likely to drive valuable traffic to your site (i.e. visitors who are likely to convert to customers). This means balancing the following factors during selection:

keyphrase frequency (how many times a particular keyphrase is used in the search engines - the more frequent, the more traffic would result)

number of competing sites (the number of sites competing for that keyphrase - the more sites, the more difficult to obtain a good listing)

specific product relevance (the more specifically related to your product and pages a keyphrase is, the better your chances of success - more visitors may click through from generic terms, but they will be less likely overall to convert to customers than visitors drawn by specific terms).

Step three is to ensure that your site is the best that it can be, with plenty of useful and interesting content that visitors will appreciate and other websites link to. Search engines will consider a site's importance relative to other competing sites on the Web when determining which sites to return for a query, and the quality of your content will play a critical role in increasing your site's importance according to the two main criteria:

link 'popularity' - the number, relevance and quality of links to your site from other websites and users

clickthrough rate and post-click user behaviour - the frequency with which the site is clicked through to from the search engine results, and the number of pages viewed before a user exits the site or returns to the results.

Step four is search engine optimisation - optimising the website for these keyphrases using meta tags, page content, link structure, page formatting etc so that presentation of information is optimal for keyphrase relevance, and all the main pages of the site can be easily found and indexed by a search engine.

An additional part of the optimisation process is consideration of the listing which will actually appear in a search engine or directory's results: a top ten listing which no-one clicks on is effectively useless, so the listing itself must entice visitors to click through for more.

Step five is to initiate an ongoing programme of high-quality link development, online directory submissions, and traffic-building for the short and long-term. Note that new websites (and new domains in particular) can be subject to an 'aging delay,' a tactic employed to deter spammers which can lead to a wait of nine months or more before a new site starts to appear in the results. For this reason you may need to supplement SEO activity with pay-per-click listings to bring traffic to the site while you wait for your site to show up in the 'organic' (free) results. This approach has the further advantage of generating quantitative data about the search terms that work for your site and post-click user behaviour which can be factored into your site design and SEO campaign for maximum return on investment (ROI).

As for converting visitors to customers - the second key element to website success - this is a combination of factors:

i) Good page design. It must be easy for the visitor to buy whenever he/she is ready: this means supplying all the information required to answer any questions, and a 'buy now' button (or equivalent) at every stage.

ii) Good selling copy. Many believe that because reading text on-screen is inherently more difficult than reading print, websites should employ a 'less is more' approach to their copy by reducing it to bullet points and simple statements.

However, in fact the reverse approach should be employed - on the web, longer copy sells better, in all likelihood because customers need as much information as possible to make a decision, and unlike in a bricks and mortar store, cannot hold the product in their hands or talk directly with a sales consultant. Testimonials, demos, screenshots, product features and easy-to-read copy are all crucial for closing the sale.

iii) Security. With online credit card fraud on the rise and gaining increasing publicity, all e-commerce websites need to reassure customers that their credit card details will be safe if they choose to buy online, and should also publish a privacy policy explaining how customers' details are kept and used.

iv) Delivery and guarantee information. Sites selling over the web need to compensate for the elements a customer would expect from an in-store transaction, and supply clear information about delivery options and guarantees, technical support or returns policies.

The third key element of website success - customer retention - is to ensure that your customers have a positive experience of buying from your site. The path from product to checkout should be made as smooth as possible to ensure would-be customers don't encounter any distractions, delays, irritations or hiccups which might cause them to abandon their purchase. Thereafter, they should receive notifications of the status of their order at all stages of the process, their item should be as described and delivered in a timely fashion - and of course your customer service has to be unfailingly polite, helpful and most importantly available. Emails and calls should be answered promptly, and it helps if your policies are flexible enough to address the infinite variety of customer requests. Happy customers not only spend more, they can also be a valuable source of free promotion, so ensuring customer satisfaction is vital. Make it easy for them to return and spread the word, with bookmark-us and tell-a-friend links, and don't forget the social networking sites like Digg and MySpace.

So mainly there are different criteria to measure the success of the website. With the help of monitoring tools, following statistics would help to measure the success of the website.

No. of visitors

Sales ratio(ratio of the number of visitors and purchase made)

How many customers bookmark the site

How many customers refer website to others(refer to friend section will be on website)

By generating total sales report at the end of the month.

DEVELOPMENT

Logical Description:

Website development refers to the non design aspects of building websites, e.g. writing mark up and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static page of plain text to the complex web-based internet applications, electronic business, or social network services.

Web development requires an evolving explanation, as it is a product of numerous contributions by individuals, corporations, and technologies. It uses aspects of Web design that is one of the example of Web application that are the components of Web development, all affected by changes made to the internet. These collaborated efforts are constantly modifying elements of development aspects. The process encompasses the combination of chronology while simultaneously adapting and incorporating the changing applications of contributions.

The creation of a website includes a base platform that exists from various computer languages range from HTML, XML, ASP, and PHP. These languages may support programs or software such as JavaScript, CGI, FLASH, RSS, or ZEND OPTIMISER, that increase the level of dynamic capabilities within a given website. The technical aspect also includes pertaining to the applications of technologies and content. The integration of produced document (website) with hosting and an assigned IP (IP address) results in accessibility.

Website development encompasses the documental production aspect of a website while incorporating legitimate process of search engines optimization, marketing, and business. Percentage of these applications is used by personal, commercial, and educational platforms.

Increasing the accessibility of information contained in a given website, Search Engine Optimization is a detailed process that strives to return favourable search term results in search engines. Marketing is an element implementing the distribution and retrieval of information, products, services, or goods. Ranging from product to commercial definitions, Business contributes to a summary of website development. Tools and resources are critical means incorporating elements involving website development.

Scripting Language:

Scripting Language are the high-level programming language that is interpreted by another program at runtime rather than compiled by computer's processor as other programming languages( such as C and C++)are the scripting languages, which can be embedded within HTML, commonly are used to add functionality to a web page, such a different menu styles or graphic displays or to serve dynamic advertisements.

These types of languages are client-side scripting languages, affecting the data that end user sees in a browser window. Other scripting language is server-side scripting languages that manipulates the data , usually in database, on the server.

The scripting language we have used in our website are:

Php

JavaScript

AJAX

Asp.net

HTML.

The reasons for using those scripting language in our website are as follows:

PHP is one of the most popular server side scripting languages running today. It is used for creating dynamic web pages that interact with the user offering customized information.

Its Advantages are as follows:

PHP Hypertext Processor is a server-side web programming language that can be embedded into HTML

PHP uses are widespread, and can include any kind of server functionality that takes user's input and displays or manipulates the input.

PHP can run on both UNIX and Windows servers, which makes it more accessible than Windows (ASP). This scripting language is growing day by day.

PHP is a object oriented language and its platform independence and speed on Linux server helps to build large and complex web applications.

PHP is a particularly useful programming language because it allows for advanced programming and is easy to integrate with web pages.

Another plus point of PHP is that the language interfaces very well with MySQL, a popular type of online database. MYSQL is a commercial grade database application that is made available free under the Open Source to anyone.

Another plus point of PHP is that it is Open Source Code. The actual code that is PHP is available to the public for free, while the source code for products such as ASP is not. So PHP is very cheap.

PHP is based on C++ language and the syntax used in PHP is quite similar to C/C++. C/C++ is still considered the best programming language by many programmers and people who love this language would surely feel more comfortable with the syntax of PHP.

The creation of a php-shopping cart is surprisingly simple and when done with precision it could translate into a highly effective and universally accepted php-shopping cart.

JavaScript is a browser-interpreted language that was created to access all elements of HTML and the browser. The processing is done entirely by the client-side browser which makes it very useful tool to handle processing which would have otherwise been checked server-side, thereby reducing overhead. JavaScript is also used to increase user interaction, animate objects, create drop down navigation, grab data from databases, and more! If you are working with web pages in any way, JavaScript will helps.

Advantages are as follows:

Cross-browser support

validating data on the client,

Being able to create more sophisticated user interfaces.

JavaScript effects are also much faster to download than some other front-end technologies like Flash and Java applets browsers do.

Other advantages include the fact that you don't need any extra tools to write JavaScript, any plain text or HTML editor will do, so there's no expensive development software to buy.

It's also an easy language to learn, and there's a thriving and supportive online community of JavaScript developers and information resources.

It allow Developer to add Dynamic content like image swapping, Rollover, which is not available in HTML or CSS. CSS basically used for styling your pages.

JavaScript is used to allow script access to objects embedded in other application.

AJAX is Ajax, sometimes written as AJAX (shorthand for asynchronous JavaScript and XML), is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create interactive web applications or rich Internet applications.

Advantages are as follows:

Can make requests to pages not set up for AJAX

Can set/get all HTTP headers

Can make HTTP requests using any type (GET, POST, PROPFIND, and so on)

Supports full control over POST requests, allowing for any type of data encoding

Can make POST and GET HTTP requests

Support all modern browsers

Supports asynchronous file uploads

Supports the largest number of browsers

Asynchronous- Ajax allows for the ability to make asynchronous calls to a web server. This allows the client browser to avoid waiting for all data to arrive before allowing the user to act once more.

Minimal data transfer -By not performing a full post back and sending all form data to the server, the network utilization is minimized and quicker operations occur. In sites and locations with restricted pipes for data transfer, this can greatly improve network performance.

Limited processing on the server - With the fact that only the necessary data is sent to the server, the server is not required to process all form elements. By sending only the necessary data, there is limited processing on the server. There is no need to process all form elements, process the view state, send images back to the client, and no need to send a full page back to the client.

Asp.net- ASP.NET stands for Active Server Pages .NET and is developed by Microsoft. ASP.NET is used to create web pages and web technologies and is an integral part of Microsoft's .NET framework vision. As a member of the .NET framework, ASP.NET is a very valuable tool for programmers and developers as it allows them to build dynamic, rich web sites and web applications using compiled languages like VB and C#.

ASP.NET is not limited to script languages, it allows you to make use of .NET languages like C#, J#, VB, etc.

Its Advantages are as follows:

ASP.NET drastically reduces the amount of code required to build large applications.

With built-in Windows authentication and per-application configuration, your applications are safe and secured.

It provides better performance by taking advantage of early binding, just-in-time compilation, native optimization, and caching services right out of the box.

The ASP.NET framework is complemented by a rich toolbox and designer in the Visual Studio integrated development environment. WYSIWYG editing, drag-and-drop server controls, and automatic deployment are just a few of the features this powerful tool provides.

Provides simplicity as ASP.NET makes it easy to perform common tasks, from simple form submission and client authentication to deployment and site configuration.

The source code and HTML are together therefore ASP.NET pages are easy to maintain and write. Also the source code is executed on the server. This provides a lot of power and flexibility to the web pages.

All the processes are closely monitored and managed by the ASP.NET runtime, so that if process is dead, a new process can be created in its place, which helps keep your application constantly available to handle requests.

It is purely server-side technology so, ASP.NET code executes on the server before it is sent to the browser.

Being language-independent, it allows you to choose the language that best applies to your application or partition your application across many languages.

ASP.NET makes for easy deployment. There is no need to register components because the configuration information is built-in.

The Web server continuously monitors the pages, components and applications running on it. If it notices any memory leaks, infinite loops, other illegal activities, it immediately destroys those activities and restarts itself.

Easily works with ADO.NET using data-binding and page formatting features. It is an application which runs faster and counters large volumes of users without having performance problems.

HTML (Hypertext mark-up language) is the base of a webpage. It is the language that truly "builds" the page with tables, divisions, and outputting text in certain formats, such as bold and underlined fonts. It's presence is dominating the web - it is the most widely accepted language for web design.

Its Advantages are as follows:

HTML is highly flexible.

It's interactive with CSS and JavaScript and some Applets. It's also universal and can be easily learned.

As far as programming languages, they usually are exclusive to a certain area/expertise where as HTML is convertible/compatible to morph into XML, etc and XML can be used to operate programs.

It is the language that truly "builds" the page with tables, divisions, and outputting text in certain formats, such as bold and underlined fonts.

DATABASE

A database is a structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer system. The structure is achieved by organizing the data according to a database model. The model in most common use today is the relational model. Other models such as the hierarchical model and the network model use a more explicit representation of relationships.

The reasons for using the database in our website are as follows:

To provide the enterprise with Centralised control of its operational data.

A database allows you to manage and use an incredible variety of information easily.

Databases are easy to set-up, easy to manipulate and easy to use.

A database allows you to maintain order in what could be a very chaotic environment.

Databases can be expanded and manipulated as your organisation grows and your resources increase.

The Data redundancy can be reduced- In the non-Data Base systems, every application has its own files and this results in redundancy of some stored data, which reduces the storage capacity for storing data.

The inconsistency can be avoided which is done automatically in the last step.

The data can be shared- Does not means that the same data can be shared in more than one application only but also the new application can uses this stored data with any need to re-entering this data for another time.

Corporate standards can be enforced.

Security Restrictions can and must be applied.

Data Integrity can be maintained.

Conflicting requirements can be balanced.

SECURITY

The reason organizations want to protect information should be for sound business purposes. Security is the ability of a system to protect information and system resources with respect to confidentiality and integrity. Corporations must ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of their data. Security is the symbol of how organizations demonstrate their commitment to protecting their vital information assets. With respect to the website content security can be divided into two types-

DATA SECURITY:-

Copyright: It means that the information and materials on this website, including data, pages, documents, online graphics, images and web pages, audio and video are protected by copyright so you are not permitted to re-transmit, distribute or commercialise the information or material without seeking prior written approval from the owner of the website. You may download, store in cache, display, print and copy a single copy or part of a single copy of information or material from this site only for your personal, non-commercial use and only in an unaltered form.

Encryption: Encryption is the conversion of data into a form, called a ciphertext, that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized people. Decryption is the process of converting encrypted data back into its original form, so it can be understood.

Virtual Private Network (VPN):

It is a network that is constructed by using public wires to connect nodes. For example, there are a number of systems that enable you to create networks using the Internet as the medium for transporting data. These systems use encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network and that the data cannot be intercepted.

TRANSACTIONS SECURITY:

Secure Sockets Layer(SSL): It is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.

Secure Electronic Transaction (SET): It is a system for ensuring the security of financial transactions on the Internet. It was supported initially by Mastercard, Visa, Microsoft, Netscape, and others. A protocol designed to ensure the security and integrity of online communications and purchases, Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) uses digital certificates, issued to merchants and other businesses and customers, to perform a series of security checks verifying that the identity of a customer or sender of information is valid. SET provides the basic framework within which many of the various components of securing digital transactions function. Digital certificates, digital signatures, and digital wallets all function according to the SET protocol.

INCLUSION

Inclusion is a sense of belonging: feeling respected, valued for who you are; feeling a level of supportive energy and commitment from others so than you can do your best work.

In our website we have used graphics, animations, sound, links, guest book inclusions which engage each individual and makes people feeling valued essential to the success of the organization. Individuals function at full capacity, feel more valued, and included in the organization's mission. This culture shift creates higher performing organizations where motivation and morale soar.

Key Elements of Inclusion:

Actively including others in collaboration and co-creation processes to maximize individual and collective contributions.

Involving the right people (regardless of rank or tenure) in innovation, decision-making, market development and leadership toward the common goals.

Learning to live and work together.

Promoting values and practices that demonstrate openness, respect, collaboration and appreciation of the validity of different points of view.

Recognizing and supporting the intrinsic value of all human beings by creating and sustaining conditions that foster equity, empowerment, awareness and competence at the personal, group and organizational levels.

POST SALES SERVICES

Services received after the original goods or services has been paid for. The reason behind using the post sales services in our website is to satisfy the demands of the customer all around the world and for accomplishing this business internationally. Therefore basically turning post-sales service into a competitive advantage, more manufacturers are seeking global service parts logistics assistance.

In the competitive high-tech marketplace manufacturers have long gone head-to head, for market share around the world. Now manufacturers are seeking an edge over their rivals in the often undervalued area of service. The quality and delivery of post-sales service is becoming increasingly critical as businesses do everything in their power to be more cost-effective, boost profit margins and meet customer demand for near-continuous availability of products.

For finance directors, inventory reduction has become the corporate mantra as they seek to squeeze days-stock-on-hand, while increasing the level of customer service.

Companies face a number of inefficiencies in post-sales service that increase costs and cause delays. Topping the list is inefficient network design, followed by factors such as poor visibility into inventory, long cycle times, inconsistent customer service, inventory obsolescence and the significant costs of brick-and-mortar Investments.

To overcome these obstacles and turn post-sales service into a competitive advantage, more manufacturers are seeking global service parts logistics assistance. The service parts logistics (SPL) industry supports the overall repair and maintenance of equipment as it moves through its post-sales lifecycle. SPL includes the management, distribution and return of parts, as well as parts repair and Refurbishment. A service parts network includes order and inventory management, distribution and technical support, call centers, technical couriers, repair engineers and repair centers. Given client uptime requirements, an effective SPL network must provide for storage of parts in close proximity to field engineers and customer sites around the world.

The SPL process is typically characterized by multiple hand-offs among disparate locations. Central stocking locations, field stocking locations and service technicians all hold inventory at various times and places, making access to needed parts more difficult and visibility of inventory on hand even more daunting.

Companies that previously met expected service levels by holding inventory at multiple points to ensure that it would be available when needed are now facing economic pressures to decrease inventory carrying costs or the expense of holding goods. Compounding the problem are huge product and parts lists, customers all over the world and increasingly demanding service levels of eight, four and even two hour response times. Parts availability is solution to meet the final customer expectations.

RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS
