Introduction
The Olympics former known as summer games take place once in every four years. It is one of those games which is considered to be the most multi sports event. It all started in 776 BC. The game was held for the first time in Greece, a place called Olympia. Later on Christian Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I posed restriction on it in 393 AD as a protest against paganism. In 1896 the summer games were revived by Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, a French nobleman. From then the era of the Modern Summer Games started.
“The goal of Olympics is to place everywhere sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to encouraging the establishment of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” Olympism is a life philosophy which draws together sport, culture and education in the aim of creating a harmonious balance between body, will and mind. Originally promoted by Coubertin, this philosophy is an essential element of the Olympic Movement and the celebration of the Games
Olympics since then have been the very important and most watched sport event of the world.
In a brief view Olympics has been popular to almost all the countries round the world. It is one such mega event where participant and spectator travel from all around the world to witness the games.
The assessment of the economic significance of the Olympics to a host city, its region and country has become an important aspect of the overall assessment of the value or worth of hosting the Olympic Games.
These evaluations are often known as economic collision assessments or reports, and are increasingly being used in the early stages of the Olympic bidding process1. It is crucially important that the host city and the organising committee in the host city are aware of the scale of the economic benefits that hosting the Games may bring. This certainly allows the Olympic Games to be highlighted and marketed in the local framework as getting forward noteworthy profit to the host economy and providing the organising committee with the route of benefits so that it could have an improved thoughtful of how big the costs of the bidding for the hosting the games should be. There has been a careful study on how does games affect on the hosting country, and according to the research hosting the Olympics has not always brought financial reward. Olympics held in 1972 and 1976 in Munich, Germany and Montreal, Canada made losses of £178 million and £692 million. Whereas the Olympics in Los Angeles USA and Barcelona Spain has made surpluses of £215 million and £2 million.
The economic collision of the Los Angeles Olympics was analysed by Economic Research Associates (1984). This study used an input-output model based on a yardstick input-output model used in the US for local impact analysis, RIMS II. This study found the economic impact of the games on Southern California to be US$2.3 billion in 1984 dollars, and supported 73,375 jobs.
It is said that 2012 Olympics games will be one of the most momentous events in London's history. It is already transforming the North-East part of the city, and will undoubtedly be a catalyst for regenerating the capital's self-respect. It is vital for everybody concerned that the Olympics are successful. But the tourism industry is often singled out as the principal beneficiary. Sporting events and tourism go hand in hand, a wide variety of audience come to witness the games, the impact of hosting the Games on a city's tourism infrastructure. The study of Barcelona and Sydney are great examples of supposedly “great” games of tourism.
The audiences regularly cited for such events as the Olympics are overstated. Audience at the Games displace normal visitors and fright tourists away for some time. Both Sydney and Barcelona had “excellent”. Olympic Games, but their tourism industries have not significantly benefited.
Research Purpose and Statement of Problem:-
The Main aim of doing this research is to find the different effective Manpower planning techniques undertaken by London hotels in 2012 for a mega event like Olympics.
To understand how a Human Resources department of the hotel strategies to accommodate the staffing needs of the property.
Research Objectives:
As you know Olympics are coming to London in less than 1000 days time in the year 2012.The major part of the city especially the north east part is really buzzing with great energy from the making of the Olympic park. The main objective of this assignment is to understand the manpower planning strategies undertaken by London hotels in 2012 mega event
Research Questions:-
Research questions are ones which are derived from the actual statement of problem which the research is carried on. Question is just not formed from the air they are derived from the context and from the response of the situation (Andrews, 2003).
The research question for the study is:
Literature Review
Business is a human activity. Although manpower requirement changes, admin workers may be replaced by computers and factory workers by automation, mid level managers may vanish as their companies de-layer, there is still remains a basic fact: no company can operate without people.
The two most important and essential resources of any business of whatever size and whatever nature are people and money. And of these two, the people resource is the most complex. Money is money whether it comes from loan or equity sources: it does not need to be distinguished from any other money; one five-pound note has the same value as another. People, on the other hand, are all different. They have different attributes and characteristics both physical and mental; they have different backgrounds, educational levels and more over different skills/ abilities. A company not only need manpower but their different functions which are needed to fulfil the task at a given point of time. When it requires managers, it cannot satisfy its need by recruiting labourers: neither can surpluses of managers make up for a shortage of skilled production workers.
Research approach
There are mainly two approaches to research and these are qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative research is widely used which emphasizes on the meanings and the experiences related to the particular phenomenon. On the other hand quantitative research attempts to measure the frequency of the occurrence for a particular phenomenon.
For example: How often does the hotel have to change their manpower planning techniques to accommodate the mega event?Becomes an experience to a person answering which becomes qualitative research while how many times the strategy does needs changing? Becomes a frequency to measure and which is quantitative research (Collis, Hussey, 2003).
Research Methodology
Methodologies are a paradigmatic set of a particular framework associated with assumptions that is used to conduct a research. It can be either scientific method, ethnography, action research and so on. The use of primary research and secondary research will be used for the subject proposal at hand. As well as quantitative and qualitative research methods are to be conducted (O' Leary, 2009).
Data Collection methods and Analysis:
As mentioned above in the research methodologies section, for secondary research the data's will be collected from academic books, journals, magazines, newspapers, articles, and many other collection of books relating to the topic which explains the understanding of the strategies undertaken by London hotels for manpower planning. For the primary research the methods such as interview will be conducted of about 5 major leading chains of hotels. And the tools used for to get more data will be well planned questionnaires with both open and closed ended questions. The number of questions will range from 20-30 which will include yes and no type of questions and the questionnaires will be conducted in person or over direct mail, and at last the collected data will undergo for critical analysis in order to fulfill the aims and objectives of the research.
Time Scales and Time chart:-
The most crucial part of the research is time management to carry out the research in professional manner, I have organized my time scale in two halves that is mid of the month and next the end of the month. This would help to have the research done in a systematic way which won't create end time problems of not gathering data or any other issues.
To start with the Beginning of February, I am going to concentrate on the research purpose, aim and objectives along with the literature review. This will carry out till the end of the month till the first half of the march. In this research it will include detail analysis of strategies undertaken by leading hotel chains for Olympics. It will also include in depth knowledge about their training programs and their recruitment Structure.
After that first month moving on to the next month the part of data collection by interviewing and distribution of questionnaires in order to get the feed and answer for the research will be conducted in the mid March. To achieve the target for the completing of methodology part by end of March. By the end of April the analysis of the collected data with be done, and to come up with the whole research into a productive conclusion to be achieved by end of April. Thereafter to have an error or amendment check of the entire research by the supervisor by the end of April. Then submission of the whole project which will be in May.
