Pakistan Cement Factories continue to make significant progress in cement exports. Now Pakistan is ranked 5th in the world's cement exports after a huge increase of 47 percent in exports during last fiscal year.
According to the Global cement report, China maintained first position with 26 million tonnes in exports, while Japan got second position by exporting 12.6 million tonnes of cement. Third largest cement exporter in world is Thailand with around 12 million tonnes, followed by Turkey which exported 11.6 million tonnes of cement. Pakistan now at 5th position has left Germany behind by exporting 11 million tonnes of cement during last fiscal year. Germany now stands at 6th position with 9 million tonnes exports.
Cement market experts told that Pakistan secured 5th position because of high demand of cement in nearby countries and by capturing new markets such as African countries, Qatar & Iraq. Pakistan could achieve the mark of 13 to 14 million tonnes exports by the end of the fiscal year keeping in view Indian market which has once again started importing cement from Pakistan. According to the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), local dispatches were 19.3 million tonnes (down 14 percent YoY) however exports showed an encouraging increase of 47 percent (YoY to 11.3 million tonnes) during the last fiscal year.
According to experts, important factors contributing towards growth of cement sector are "Record Public Sector Development Programme allocation (Rs 621 billion) in the budget FY10, reduction in excise duty by Rs 10 per bag and declining interest rate scenario.
Local demand of cement in Pakistan will remain on high side due to the reconstruction activities of devastated homes, shops and schools in Swat and Malakand after Military operation. Overall Pakistan cement industry dispatches are likely to grow 7 percent in July 2009. The growth in cement dispatches is solely attributable to rising export volumes as domestic demand remained depressed on every comparable time period.
Overall cement plants of Pakistan operated at 80 percent capacity utilisation as compared with 81 percent utilisation in the same month of last year. Although Fauji Cement has claimed 100% utilization during last year. Cement exports of Pakistan continue to show healthy and positive growth trend and recorded 45 percent growth on Y-o-Y basis. However, on M-o-M basis, cement exports represented a decline of 3 percent.
Weight of sea based cement exports during the month was recorded at 68 percent in overall cement exports as compared to 63 percent in July 2008. It is important to note that cement exports to India during the month were recorded at 63,000 tonnes, which is lower when compared with the initial monthly average of 100,000 tonnes.

Attock Cement Pakistan Limited (ACPL) is a Pakistan-based company. The Company is occupied in manufacturing and selling cement. The Company offers ordinary portland cement, sulphate resistant cement and portland blast furnace cement under its Falcon Cement brand name. It also supplies specially formulated mixes to suit customer requirements. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, the Company produced 1,706,299 tons of clinker, and 1,792,619 tons of cement.
Maple Leaf Cement Factory Limited
MLCFL was set up in 1956, in Daudkhel in Northern Pakistan, as a joint collaboration between West Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (WPIDC) and Government of Canada. The initial production capacity was 120,000 tons per annum (tpa) of ordinary portland cement. Another production line of 180,000 tpa was added in 1960. A white cement manufacturing facility, the first of its kind in Pakistan, with 15,000 tpa capacity was set-up in 1967, under the name of White Cement Industries Limited (WCIL) at the same location. Its capacity was subsequently increased to 30,000 tpa by the installation of a second white cement line. Under the West Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation Ordinance 1974, MLCFL and White Cement Industries were transferred to State Cement Corporation of Pakistan (Pvt.) Limited (SCCP), set-up by the Government of Pakistan (GoP) in 1974, as a holding company to manage all nationalised cement manufacturing companies. Another unit named as Pak Cement Company Limited (PCCL) was established under the technical and economic assistance program of National Complete Plant Export Corporation of the Government of the People's Republic of China with annual clinker production capacity of 180,000 tons. It was incorporated as a private limited company in 1983 and was subsequently privatized in 1992.
At the time of privatization in 1992, the capacity of Maple Leaf to produce Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was 1000 tonnes per day (tpd). A second plant of 4000 tpd was commissioned in 1998 and a third plant of 6700 tpd will be online in 2006. This will increase the total capacity to 11,700 tpd. The capacity of White Cement has also increased from 100 tpd to 500tpd with the addition of a new plant. This plant also has provisions for doubling the capacity to 1000tpd. Presently Maple Leaf cement has 9% of the market share of OPC and is a leading brand in Pakistan with a diverse customer base. It is also the largest producer of White Cement in the country.

As of June 30, 2010, the Company had installed capacity to produce 1,165,500 metric tons of cement. Lucky Cement Limited
Lucky Cement Limited is a Pakistan-based company occupied in the manufacturing and marketing of cement. The Company offers three types of cement: ordinary portland cement, sulphate resistant cement and slag cement. These products are offered under various brand names, including Lucky Cement (Regular), Lucky Star, Lucky Gold and Lucky Sulphate Resistant Cement (SRC). Ordinary Portland cement is available in darker shade, as well as in light shades with different brand names. Slag cement is also available for specific user requirements.
