Published: November 17, 2015 Words: 5900

This report, introduce about knifes history, type, part, color, material, how to production and the process . And then I choose a product doing research, why the knife make this form.

History of knife

The knife (plural knives) is a cutting tool with an exposed cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with or without a handle. Knife-like tools were used at least two-and-a-half million years ago, as evidenced by the Oldowan tools. Originally made of rock, flint, and obsidian, knives have evolved in construction as technology has, with blades being made from bronze, copper, iron, steel, ceramics, and titanium. Many cultures have their unique version of the knife. Due to its role as humankind's first tool, certain cultures have attached spiritual and religious significance to the knife. Most modern-day knives follow either a fixed-blade or a folding construction style, with blade patterns and styles as varied as their makers and countries of origin.

Kind of knife

Knife in the essential to life, in the life may, according to the different USES of the knife can be divided into, weapons, sports 4

equipment, utensils, tools.

Knives as weapons, As a weapon, the knife is universally adopted as an essential tool. It is the essential element of a knife fight. For example: ballistic knife, bayonet, combat knife, dagger, fighting knife, rampuri, shiv, trench knife.

Knives as sports equipment. The throwing knife is a knife that is specially designed and weighted so that it can be thrown effectively. They are a distinct category from ordinary knives. Throwing knives are used by many cultures around the world, and as such different tactics for throwing them have been developed, as have different shapes and forms of throwing knife.

Knives as utensils, a primary aspect of the knife as a tool includes dining, used either in food preparation or as cutlery. Examples of this include: bread knife, boning knife, carving knife, carving knife, chef's knife, cleaver, butcher's knife, electric knife, oyster knife, table knife, ulu. 5

Knives as tools, as a utility tool the knife can take many forms, including: balisong, bowie knife, diver's knife, electrician's knife, hunting knife, linoleum knife, machete, multitool, palette knife, paper knife, pocket knife, produce knife, scalpel, straight razor, survival knife, switchblade, utility knife, wood carving knife, x-Acto knife.

Part of knife color and material

Modern knives consist of (1) a blade and (2) a handle (3) the point (4) the edge (5)the grind,(6) the spine (7), the fuller, (8) the ricasso,(9) the guard, (10) the end of the handle, or butt.(11) to be used to secure the knife to the wrist. Usually the colors are to be determined 6

according to the color of the material

About the material Originally made of rock, bone, flint, and obsidian, knives have evolved in construction as technology has, with blades being made from bronze, copper, iron, steel, ceramics, and titanium.

Form etc

This knife has two parts make it one is blade, the other is handle. The blade flat ground have a profile that tapers from the thick spine to the sharp edge in a straight or convex line. Seen in cross section, the blade would form a long, thin triangle, or where the taper does not extend to the back of the blade, a long thin rectangle with one peaked side. The handle is flower human hand to design, make sure people can hold on. I think the knife should be simple, light, easy to use for housewife. So this knife I feel is like that. 9

Unique feature

Then I make the research about from Zwilling Group's knife of the kitchen, the Zwilling tool many series I have selected a series of investigations.

TWIN®Profection first it Sophisticated aesthetics and performance. Second quality The special formula steel convinces with its optimum balance of chromium and carbon content - the secret of particularly high-quality steel. FRIODUR branded knives have been ice-hardened to enhance their quality, they have exceptional cutting properties, are especially corrosion resistant and flexible. And the function the full edge enables cutting along the whole length of the blade. This edge combines Japanese and European cutting culture. The next point precision , , precision-forged from one piece for impeccable geometry, the basic requirement for exact grinding and best cutting properties. The last one handling, the wedge-shaped unique blade geometry delivers optimum stability and an easy cut, the new curved bolster shape stands for safe and precise handling. 10

Analysis of its manufacture

TWIN® Knife Manufacturing: SIGMAFORGE®

SIGMAFORGE® is one piece precision forging used in manufacturing several ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS TWIN® knife series including TWIN® Four Star II, TWIN® Select, TWIN® Pro "S", TWIN® Five Star, and Four Star. SIGMAFORGE knives are forged from a single piece of steel and have the following benefits: 1 Perfect geometry 2 High forging precision 3 Higher stability of the blade 4 Less metal fatigue - improved steel structure 5 Improved cutting edge retention and lasting sharpness 6 Friodur® ice hardened - Maximum no stain properties and more blade strength. Shown below are examples of TWIN® Pro "S"

The manufacture process is traditional hot drop forged process and then stamped. First the hot drop forged : The Traditional Hot Drop Forged Process is used exclusively for the TWIN® Cuisine knife series. TWIN® Cuisine knives, through this process, are also constructed from a single piece of steel. Due to the exclusive 11

horizontal design of the tang, the knives can only be manufactured through this process. This construction also results in a heavy weight - durable knife, and the patented TWIN® Cuisine handle design. Of course these knives are also Friodur® ice hardened for maximum no-stain properties and more blade strength. Second stamped: TWIN® Signature and TWIN® Gourmet knives are constructed through a one piece, fully stamped process. This construction provides for excellent cutting performance and sturdiness.

Brand values

This company is not only production knife, they also production: Kitchen Gadgets, Scissors, Flatware. How can this company is fame, because they from material will start to production every step are serious the material they use Carbon steel and Stainless steel. The quality of a knife is decisively influenced by the grade of steel used. The most important characteristics of the steel used to make the blade are corrosion resistance and hardness. Still now they are not stop their footstep, still innovations about knife.

Exclusive High Carbon, No-Stain Steel

Resistance to corrosion and hardness are determined by the content of chromium and carbon in the raw material and its subsequent heat treatment. ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS undertook intensive research to find the optimum alloy resulting in a "special formula" that is still being used today in TWIN® cutlery assortments.

FRIODUR®

FRIODUR® is a trademark of ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS. It is used for products that undergo a special ice-hardening for maximum blade strength and no-stain properties. This process also ensures that your knife will have a lasting cutting edge.

Conclusion

From the research I learned a lot of knowledge, know many material. The history of the knife, which material suit make knife, the part of the knife, how is production. The knife's production process. 12

Introduction

From our teacher I know Dieter Rams , then I looking for his information in the website. In this report introduce his story , designs , his design style and his principles about product.

Story

Dieter Rams. he was born May 20, 1932 in Wiesbaden, Hessen . He was a German industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun and the Functionalist school of industrial design.

In 1974 Rams was study architecture and interior decoration at Wiesbaden School of Art. Later in 1948 He was rest a span, then he from study to got practical experience and finish his carpentry apprenticeship, kept his study at Wiesbaden School of Art. After his study, he was work for based architect Otto Apple at Frankfurt. In 1599 he was recruited to Braun as an architect and an interior designer. In 1961 Rams become to chief of design in the Braun, until 1995.

Rams deeply influence by his carpenter grandfather. Rams once described his own design method:"Weniger, aber besser'" which means less but better. Rams and his worker designed many memorable products for the Braun, including is the famous SK-4 record player and the high-quality 'D'-series (D45, D46) of 35 mm film slide projectors. He is always known for designing the 606 Universal Shelving System by Vitsoe in 1960.

By producing electronic design, Dieter Rams become a household name in the 50's At the same time he is considered to be one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century

Many of his design. e.g. coffee makers, calculators, radios, audio/visual equipment, consumer appliances and office products, We can find home and many museums in the world. 4

In 2010, his contribution to the world of design, he was awarded the 'Kölner Klopfer' prize by the students of the Cologne International School of Design.

Design Principles And Style

He think of the idea of sustainable development and of obsolescence being a crime in design in the 1970s. He always asked himself the question: is my design good design? The answer formed his now celebrated ten principles. Therefore, he concluded ten principles for their own design. Whenever he devised a product is always ten principles to measure.

1 Innovative - Innovation can be anywhere. Technological development is always offering new opportunities by innovative design but innovative design always develops in tandem for innovative technology, and cannot be an end in itself.

2 Makes a product useful - Product is bought to be used. It has have to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, and also psychological and aesthetic. A good design is the important is usefulness of a product at the same time disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

3 Aesthetic - The aesthetic quality of the product is a part, to its usefulness. Since products are used daily, and have an effect the people and their happiness. Only happiness objects can be beautiful.

4 Makes the product understandable - It explain the product's structure. Better still, it can make the product clearly express its function by making use of the user's intuition. At best, it is self-explanatory

5 Unobtrusive - Products fulfilling a purpose tools. They are not decorative objects and not works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user's self-expression.

6 Honest - It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

7 Long-lasting - It avoids being fashionable and so never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years - even in today's throwaway society 5

8 Is thorough down to the last detail - Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

9 Environmentally friendly - Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

10 Is as little design as possible - Less, but better - because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

Products

Citromatic MPZ2/21/22 citrus juicer this product has 2 designer there are Dieter Rams and Jurgen Greubel. But we can see from this product's Rams' style. First Rams was said "less but better", This product 7

without any spare parts. Second his ten principles, Rams said a good product has to be Long-lasting. It avoids being fashionable and so never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years - even in today's throwaway society. So this design still in production today ,38 years after original design, and it make the product understandable ,we will at once know what is function for the product, It used plastic and acrylic make it, look like simple and practical. The acrylic has another names , we often call the Lucite, or Perspex . These materials lighter and stronger than the iron .

Plastic

Acrylic 8

water outlet , it can be adjusted up and down enables you to extract juice straight into your glass. By pushing the spout upward the flow of juice is stopped and the glass can be exchanged without spilling one single drop. Easy, clean and fast.

Easy to clean , the multiquick citrus juicers all the parts Can be removable. So it will easy to clean . and the groove on the body . we will once know put the glass at here. When we do not use it, we can lid prevent dust to enter.

This part unlike knife but it has knife's function ,it use plastic made.

Ensure safety.

we can see the logo's color is orange ,when people see the color , they will think of fruit orange . they will think this product is citrus juicer . The top part bigger than other parts , This facilitates us to seize, at the same time can prevent juices overflow. This product has Start/Stop automatic easy 9

and fast

Imitate Design

I according to Rams design style and his design principles, I imitate design. This product follow Rams principles, he said a good product has to be Long-lasting. It avoids being fashionable and so never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years - even in today's throwaway society. And "less but better" it's Rams style.

Here is easy to catch , when it working you have to catch, prevent it move .

Change the knife's size, it will make the other juice like watermelon, not only orange .

The juicer all the part can be removable, it will easy to clean, it still use plastic and acrylic, because these material not perishable.

Conclusion

By understanding the Dieter Rams story, designs , his design style and his 10

principles about product. I leaned what is a good product, for a product the exterior is not important, the most important is the function , the usefulness of a product, Rams said "less but better" . At the same times we must focus on the environmental protection,

Introduction

This is a research report of a designer. I need to choose a product designer to study and understand his profile, background, design style, and the object of his design. I will learn about the designer career, what is the design style, how to appreciate the good design work and how to find out the design style of the designer from this task.

In the end of this task, I will imitate and redesign his product. The designer who I choose is Ron Arad. He is famous for his creative versatility and the experimental way he fuses technology, manufacturing processes and a daring array of materials into objects.

He is well-known in furniture and architecture design. He do very well in using extreme and mercurial material such as carbon fiber, acrylic, polyurethane, concrete, glass, polyester, plywood, steel, leather and crystal with superb craftsmanship to design product.

Biography

Design Style

Ron Arad design style is always curving, blending and look like waves. He is good in using a variety of novelty material with high technology. At the same time, he also consider the manufacturing processes of the product. He be fond of using bright colour or polished chrome steel to do design. But, his design work is always less functional. 9

Imitate Design

After I study Ron Arad's work, I found that he has designed a chair with simple sheet which is 'Papardelle Chair'. It is using woven stainless steel mesh and steel to made. The dimension of the chair is height 102cm, length 206.5cm, depth 23 60cm. He was designed in 1992. This is my most favour design of all Arad's. I though this is quite cool and simple. So, I choose this product to imitate. I found that Papardelle blending like cloth. Then, I enlarge it on my redesign product.

My imitate product-Table with Chair

Conclusion

After doing this report, I understand what is the designer need to do, how to evaluation and appreciation design works, and how difficult to design a good product. I improved my research skill again. Moreover, I learned a lot from Ron Arad. For example, he is a professionalism designer as he not picky any design work. He not only designed very small thing like bar equipment, but also designed very big thing like museum. The spirit of his be worth we to learn. I also agree his inspiration which is 'Everything has be done before'. Furthermore, I also understand how important of design style for the designer. It is more easy to let people identify you product, if the style of the designer is clear. 10
