Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong, also known as Mr. Lim. He is king of casino of Malaysia. Mr. Lim was born in 1918, in Anxi, which is located in Fujian Province China.
His family background is he has 7 brothers and sisters. He is the fifth son in the family ranking. He started his first study when he is 6 years old. After that his brother was died when he is 12 years old and his father rest in peace during his aged 16. And thus, he as the older in the family, he was forced to drop and leave his education field, because he need to bear the responsible of taking care and hold the family of seven members. Mr. Lim said, because of his father is a farmer before, always taking the vegetables to sell at the market in order to earn income. And thus, after his father is passing away, he then continues his father's work. At the beginning, he was borrow RM 2 as his starting capital fund from relatives and friends, after working hard in 2 years, he earned around RM100 and then he uses the money to pay his father's debt.
The processes of how was him come to Malaya is during 1937, the Japan having wars with China. Then Mr. Lim comes to Malaya and working for around 2 years. After that he established a company, but then he goes back to China and work as a carpenter. At 1941, Mr. Lim was come back to Malaya again because of the deterioration of the situation in china. Then he start up his job, which a hardware trading. At 1945, his mother pass away, and at the same year, he was get married with his wife, named Lee Kim Hua. They were then having 6 children.
The experiences of Mr. Lim, by having nothing from the beginning stage, become a successful entrepreneur finally is after the Japanese surrender, Malaya then reconstruction. British then bring in a lot of opportunities. Such as the latest machinery, for example cranes, concrete mixer to Malaya. After end of the project, the machinery will tender sold to peoples. Mr. Lim then takes this opportunity as his first fortune, which is as a second-hand machinery trading.
Mr. Lim is the founder of the Genting Group. Many people always praise his spirit of determination entrepreneurial. At 1965, he got an idea of building a hilltop resort. When he starting to develop Genting at Ulu Kali at a place called Genting Sempah, which is a barren forest and it to be an ideal location for his plan. He then starting to collect data on the topography, drainage, soil condition and other relevant aspects of the region, all of these are very important for drawing up a plan for developing the resort.
When Mr. Lim comes out this idea and decided to take action on it, many people thought it was really risky and he was a foolish to invest large amount of money and time to develop this so called GENTING. But Mr.Lim brushed off all these negativities and went ahead firmly with his plan.
He maintain and improve his business by the cause of the harder the challenge for him, the energetic he is, said by Mr. Lim before. When he begins to developing Genting, his property is already owned at least 5 million in Ringgit Malaysia. Many people are curious about why he still want to take this risk? Mr. Lim then tells to a reporter, "I developing this stage of Genting is totally just because of fighting for my dream, I wanted to achieve this "Genting Highland" dream". After achieve this dream, he then starting to use his capital to invest other business that he is interested in. such as Genting Berhad, First World, Agriculture, and etc. other than that, he also own "Genting Petrol Gas Berhad" and a cruises company.
His principle applied in his business management is Mr. Lim was a successor that from having nothing until wealthy. Having a poor living and have not been educated during young age. Then he learns about economical knowledge by himself. And he also told us, his way of management is belongs to what experiences he gained and learned before. Moreover, Mr. Lim insists his principle in management study, which is "if you don't trust someone, and then don't use that person, but if you had chosen to use that person, then having to trust it." Other than that, he always remind people that, "For a person, exclude it's educational background, attitude and working capability, the most importance and valuable is it's loyalty".
The positive traits of Mr. Lim are he can keep the spirit of persistence or tenacity until get the goal or target and he has a good insight, he can taking or finding or grab an opportunity that can't find by other peoples. As well as even though no peoples support or saying that is impossible, still need to insist that you are having right decision, nothing is impossible.
I admired his spirit of persistence until reached his goal. Because he is a person that understands nothing is impossible. Without caring how the other people look at him, he makes it finally by very successful.
My family was having many problems before and the mainly problem is because of financial problem. My family's situation becomes getting worst and worst, and my father is also having very stress on it. Then I started to come out working with any working opportunity or offer for me from other peoples with no choice, but for sure all are legal jobs. My life from 16 years old is half working half study, at the beginning, I feel very hard and tired because having this kind of lifestyle. I was blame why my life so tough compares to my friends. But finally I accept my fate and stop blaming. I understood that actually sitting there and blaming is no use for improve my family's life at all. And look at my father, he is also very tough and he never gives up and didn't say anything, he still insists to going thru every day, he is brave. And then I started to think, why don't I to be stronger, and stand up and then having the spirit of persistence same with Mr. Lim Goh Tong? Then I started to have the same spirit with Mr. Lim when I face problems.
Mr. Lim is a brave and a person that can face any tough. What I learned from him is actually nothing is impossible. He is a good visionary and risk taker. Even though no people support his idea and down estimate him, and said him is a foolish, but he can proved his decision for the peoples with very successful to all around the world.
